MEDICAL ERRORS FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS*

In this course, participants will explore key factors for the prevention of medical errors in mental health clinical practice. By first gaining an understanding of the root cause analysis process participants will be able to identify the process for identifying and preventing the recurrence of medical errors. Through the exploration of self-care practices to avoid burnout and manage countertransference issues, clinicians will learn how to prevent and minimize human error in clinical practice. Patient safety, as first and foremost, requires thorough familiarity with and application of mandatory reporting laws, involuntary admission criteria, and duty to warn laws. Documentation and record keeping which is HIPPAA-compliant is essential for effective and safe clinical practice. Thorough consideration of medication effects and side effects as well as medical factors contributing to mental health symptomatology is vital for proper assessment and treatment planning. In addition, accurate consideration of culture and diversity factors is essential for preventing errors in clinical practice.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE*

This program will address topics such as whether domestic violence is a public health issue or a human rights issue. This training will bring awareness of the central role that survivors have played and continue to play in the development and delivery of domestic violence services. Acquire an appreciation of prevention work as a critical part of our response to domestic violence as individuals and in our profession. The training will also address the different difficulties among women, race, and immigration status

This program will explore contemporary ethical issues in clinical social work practice. The NASW Code of Ethics will be used as a basis for discussion. Participants will be shown to recognize potential issues that may indicate ethical decision points. You will become more familiar with current state laws and rules. Participants will learn how to create a safe and consistent therapeutic environment to eliminate ethical dilemmas.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, collaborative style of communication that focuses on empowering individuals to make therapeutic changes by resolving ambivalence in a compassionate, accepting environment. This seminar will provide an introductory overview of the rationale, history and strategies used in MI and Motivationally Enhanced Treatments (MET) in individual and group formats. This is an interactive seminar that will include videos and participant role-plays.

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

• Identify when MI techniques and strategies could be beneficial in therapy.

• Understand the importance of helping clients identify and resolve ambivalence about changing.

• Learn how to avoid common communication traps that can undermine therapeutic progress.

• Identify clients’ readiness and motivation for change utilizing MI techniques.

PREVENTION OF MEDICAL ERRORS

This presentation provides the learner with an overview of the problems related to medical errors within the health care industry as well as a discussion of the multiple factors that contribute to their occurrence. The learner will be provided information related to the frequency of medical errors, the role human error plays in the frequency of incidence, as well as methodologies for prevention and mitigation of errors. Discussion will also be held at efforts toward reduction of medical errors through regulatory initiatives, legislative mandates, and industry self-regulation efforts via patient safety programs. Error reduction strategies will also be discussed in light of technology adoption and reporting procedures.

· Understand the factors that contribute to medical errors

· Learn processes of improvement for patient care and quality outcomes

· Understand the role of the healthcare provider in patient safety programs

· Define sentinel events and strategies to improve patient safety

· Describe sources of medical errors and actions to protect patient safety

· List the 5 most misdiagnosed conditions (cancer, cardiac, acute abdomen, timely diagnosis of surgical complications, failure to identify pregnancy or stage of pregnancy prior to treatment or surgery

· Learn medication errors, surgical errors, diagnostic inaccuracies and system failures

HUMAN TRAFFICKING *NEW* MANDATORY NURSING REQUIREMENT
10:00 am – 12:00 pm | 2.0 credit hours ($34.00) 

This course encompasses a basic overview of human trafficking. The course will attempt to provide practitioners with a glimpse of the realities of human trafficking victims’ lives and the physical, psychological, social, and sexual abuse they experience. Specific interventions and responses are covered, including mental health, social services, educational, prevention, and legal efforts. Finally, for practitioners who do work with human trafficking victims, the emotional toll that it takes upon practitioners will be discussed. The course ends with an array of resources, including organizations/agencies, books, and films/documentaries focusing on the issue of human trafficking. Describe the types of, risk factors for, and extent of human trafficking in the U.S.

· Discuss the role and responsibilities of the inter-professional healthcare team in the recognition, assessment, and treatment for the victim of trafficking, including management of medical records, patient safety, and referral sources

· Identify reporting and referral resources for victims of human trafficking
